OPTIMISED
OPERATIONS TO CONNECT COMMUNITIES
In 2006 Gateway Communications expanded our long-distance network
across 30 African countries connecting them all with the very latest
Next Generation Network (NGN) technologies.
Local operations for an African footprint
Gateway’s expansion means that we can now expand our African footprint in new markets even more efficiently by carrying traffic from mobile networks, locally converting it to IP, and transmitting it over satellite between mobile networks for global connectivity.
This next-generation network allows us to deliver new IP services via a converged IP network, ensuring carrier-grade voice quality over optimised bandwidth. The new solution comprises a centrally deployed, programmable softswitch and service delivery platform, and media gateways deployed in our own or customer networks throughout Africa.
Crucially, the latest compression technologies used in our solution overcomes the delays inherent in otherwise costly satellite transmission. In essence, Gateway can now route calls with just one satellite ‘hop’, to save 50 % of the cost of each call, a considerable saving that can be passed on to African mobile network carriers.
The largest and most advanced network in Africa
This deployment means that Gateway is now the largest, most advanced network in Africa, able to leverage Africa’s legacy networks efficiently and cost-effectively. Peter Gbedemah, CEO of Gateway Communications, says the network deployment “Has been critical in facilitating rapid growth in mobile traffic across Africa. The savings on every call, allied to the vast increase in quality, make this technology indispensable to Gateway’s customers.” |
